Talking to….

David Highland

If there’s one guy who’s name goes with real estate, it’s David Highland.

As a third-generation agent, Dave has earned a reputation for playing at the top of his game. In 2019 he was awarded 6th in the top 100 agents across the country by Real Estate Business and has personally sold more than $250m worth of property.

In saying that, we thought he’d be the right person to speak to about what plants can add to a home. Here’s what he had to say…

Plants and Property

1.     Your company has recorded some of the highest sale prices for properties in the Sutherland Shire, is it safe to say that all of these properties had amazing landscapes?

We represent many different price points within the area from first homebuyers through to the top end prestige market as well as off the plan sales. Many of these properties have beautiful landscaping which definitely adds value to some of these homes.

2.     Gardens can add privacy and create social spaces in a yard. What other features do people look for in gardens when house hunting?

All buyers have different needs, for some swimming’s pools are "a must" for others they look for things that are low in maintenance. Overall most buyers tend to lean towards homes and gardens that offer entertaining spaces that their family can enjoy.

3.     When it comes to putting your home on the market, what impact does an established or well-maintained garden have?

The landscaping works hand In hand with the rest of the presentation of a property. For example, the time and importance a seller puts in to the interior of the home should be replicated externally. It does not serve a purpose to have the living and kitchen areas presented beautifully if the entrance to the home is overgrown, At the end of the day, the buyers first introduction to the property is from the front of the house and you need to use this opportunity to get their attention.

4.     Do you believe having a flourishing garden add value to a property?

Yes, I think more and more these days, buyers are aware of the value a landscaped area adds to a property.

5.     If people are planning to sell their property, what are your top tips to make over their garden?

*          Create privacy

*          Create outdoor living spaces

*          Have different zones for entertaining

*          Street presence is key
